A Dose of Winter Nudism on Snowshoes

Jade Sambrook's Feature Photo from The Naked Jade Blog: A Dose of Winter Nudism on Snowshoes

As I had mentioned in my previous blog post, summer is almost here. And until it does arrive there is simply no getting away from the cold winter – if you live in Eastern Canada like me that is.

If you live somewhere like Florida, Brazil or Cuba and you are able to visit a nude beach whenever you please, then I’m extremely jealous and envious of you!

Opportunities to practice any form of nudism are obviously very limited in my neck of the woods at this time of the year. For now I’m mostly relegated to enjoying the naked life in my own home, attending strip karaoke events or wearing my Scottish kilt while I’m out and about.

[More on strip karaoke? Read: My Naked Karaoke of Tracy Chapman’s ‘Talkin bout a Revolution’]

Luckily this winter has been very mild – which unfortunately is most likely due to global warming – and has given me the ability to wear the kilt more often than usual. Clearly nothing beats the feeling of nature’s breeze on a full naked body, but I’ll happily accept that breeze where I can get it. And wearing the kilt with nothing underneath allows for just that.

I was even able to wear the kilt to Igloofest a couple of weekends ago thanks to the mild weather. It was only minus 5 degree Celsius and very comfortable.

What is Igloofest you ask? It’s a mega outdoor wintertime rave with great music that takes place on a 50,000 square foot playground over four weekends. It attracts thousands of partyers and includes a competition for who is wearing the best one-piece snowsuit. There are tons of ice sculptures, bars and castles, a mega slide, fire pits and many games. For example this year they are hosting the first ever Christmas tree throw, which is suppose to mimic the Scottish caber toss.

[For more on the Igloofest please visit their website here: http://igloofest.ca/en/]

I attended on the Saturday night of the first weekend, and was amazed at how many folks approached me to ask if I was cold, whether I was wearing anything underneath the kilt, and if they could take a look. Many folks – mostly women – simply lifted the kilt to see for themselves and many requested photos with the kilt being held up.

Of course I do not give a damn because I’m a die hard nudist and to me there is nothing more banal than a flaccid penis. As they say, it’s just skin. What was surprising though – or rather awesome I should say – is that nobody in the crowd seemed to be bothered while the photos were being taken with the kilt lifted and my ”junk” totally exposed.

Yes, only adults eighteen years or older are allowed on the site, and certainly everybody is there to have a good time, so it is likely that they would find the lifted kilt to be simply amusing. But that nobody complained at the site of an exposed penis in public makes me believe that folks are becoming less adverse to public nudity. Maybe I’m wrong, but if it’s the case this can only be a good thing because it is precisely the direction that I’ve wanted society to take for some time now.

I was not able to attend Igloofest the following weekend because I was invited to a childhood reunion in the countryside. At first I wasn’t keen on leaving the big city and missing out on the second weekend of Igloofest, but in the end I’m happy that I did because the countryside turned out to be a great experience.

One of the highlights of the weekend was snowshoeing in my kilt. Again, the mild weather was a great help in allowing this. Then things got even better! To my great surprise I ended up getting my dose of nudism smack in the middle of winter.

That’s right! A dose of winter nudism! My friends – who all know that I’m a die hard nudist – dared me to try snowshoeing without the kilt. It didn’t take Jade Sambrook very long to strip off more than just the kilt and to venture down the trail wearing nothing but a birthday suit, a tuque, kilt hose and winter boots.

I was ecstatic about being able to try something that I had never done before. I was left with a perma-smile from the endorphin rush caused by the feeling of comfort and freedom from finally being naked outside despite the winter. In all honesty, I think that I gave new meaning to the term ‘extreme sport’ – insofar as snowshoeing is concerned.

Jade Sambrook happily naked on snowshoes

As you may know, the etymological meaning of the word gym is “naked” – originating from the Greek word ‘gymnos’. In fact, the Greek use to compete in sports wearing nothing but their birthday suit. Now, I’m certain that their sports did not involve winter snow, but I think we can agree that they’d be very proud of me. I’m certainly very proud of me!

Going forward, I’ll be attending the last two weekends of Igloofest, and most likely I’ll once again be wearing my kilt. My true wish though would be to wear my birthday suit, a tuque, kilt hose and snowshoes! That way nobody would have to hold the kilt up when taking photos. And something tells me that if that were the case the requests for photos would be nonstop.

The Nude Picture of 1000+ Words

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Then again maybe sometimes it’s actually worth more than a thousand words. I like to tell myself that that is the case with the picture here.

On an unrelated side note, I have to say that I really dislike using ‘that that’ together in a sentence. Although it is grammatically acceptable, I simply prefer not to use it. But that is another story, isn’t it?

Back to the point: the picture! It was taken during the month of June last year. When I look at it, I am reminded of the warm summer air, the beautiful blue sky, the birds and the bees as well as the trees and flowers that are so full of life. Summer truly is my favorite season – as I am sure is the case for most people – especially if you are a nudist like me.

Jade Sambrook taking walk in the woods while nude on a beautiful summer day.
Jade Sambrook taking a walk in the woods while nude on a beautiful summer day.

Here in eastern Canada where I live the winters are long and cold. Freezing cold. Did I say long too? Yes I did.

For a nudist like me winter feels like the enemy. It might not completely stop me from practicing my passion for nudism, but it is definitely nowhere near as good as summer. Of course during the winter months I can still be naked at home. And I might even go for a quick jog through the woods while bottomless – but again, winter will simply never beat summer.

I should mention though that I discovered that the white snow is great for tanning the legs and buttocks. It acts like one big reflector, equally dispersing the sun light onto any exposed skin. I learned this after spending much time outdoors – naked from the waist down – during a particular winter some years ago. Never had the skin on my legs and buttocks been so dark.

Now some folks may ask why bottomless and why not fully nude? The answer to that is that body heat is easily lost through both the nuque (back of the head & neck) and through the upper torso. So as long as you have a tuque on your head, a warm winter jacket on your upper body and a good pair of winter shoes or boots on your feet, then you can pretty much spend a great deal of time naked from the waist down out in the snow.

More on winter nudity? Read: The So-Called Victim of Montreal’s Mysterious Naked Jogger

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that it’s ideal. I’m not saying that it should or can be done when the temperature is minus thirty degree Celsius. Nor am I saying that men wont suffer from a little bit of shrinkage, because they definitely will! All that I am saying is that there is a way to experience nudism in winter – albeit only partially naked – and even get a good tan on your legs and bum while you’re at it.

Jade Sambrook naked in the winter snow
Jade Sambrook naked in the winter snow.

Alright, back to the original picture now! It was taken during the summer – not during the winter – so I should stop talking about cold snow for crying out loud! The truth of the matter however is that like I was saying earlier, a picture speaks a thousand words, or more. And the words coming from the picture is that summer is such a great season for any true nudist.

During the summer nudists can go to the nude beach. We can justify not wearing clothes at home because of the heat waves. We can go for a nude walk in the woods – or more simply put – free hiking.

When I look at the picture I am reminded that nudism is liberating. It’s healthy. It’s therapeutic. It’s extremely comfortable. In fact, I use to leave the office after a day of work with feelings of major stress and anxiety. I would then go for a walk in the woods while nude and I would come out completely cured from that stress and anxiety.

That is why I believe medical practitioners should be able to prescribe nudism as a remedy for various ailments. I am convinced that nudism might just heal many folks without the need for them to use pharmaceuticals.

And if medical doctors could prescribe longer summers along with a heavy dose of nudism, then we would definitely be living in a Utopian world. One can always dream, right?

Jade Sambrook free hiking bottomless at the end of winter
Jade Sambrook free hiking bottomless at the end of winter.

In the meantime – as winter approaches – I will continue to look at that picture to remind myself that summer is right around the corner. Yes I’m optimistic! I will continue to remind myself that soon I will be on the beach, in the woods or wherever I so happen to be – fully naked – without a single piece of clothing on my body. No tuque, no warm winter jacket and no winter boots. Just a pair of walking shoes or sandals at the very most.

Those are the words that I am reading from that picture. Somehow though I feel like it’s telling me way more than a thousand words. They are good words. Naked words. Words that make a die-hard nudist like me happy. In the end I can only be grateful for such a great picture: a nude picture of 1000+ words.

My Naked Karaoke of Tracy Chapman’s ‘Talkin bout a Revolution’

Jade Sambrook Performs Tracy Chapman’s ‘Talkin bout a Revolution’ at Bareoke (Strip Karaoke)

Bareoke use to take place at Cabaret Playhouse in Montreal, until the venue was sold by the owner and ultimately closed. It now takes place on the first Saturday of every month at Cafe Cleopatra.

In this segment I perform the final karaoke of the night. While the quality of the video, the audio and the singing may not be the best, what is important is that Jade Sambrook had a lot of fun! As usual, I do not perform a classic striptease like one would see in a strip bar with professional “chip ‘n’ dale” dancers. Instead, my clothes – in this case the kilt – come off almost immediately so that I can spend as much time as possible naked on stage. After all, most songs are only about four minutes in duration – which goes by rather quickly – so it is important to take advantage of that time to be naked for as long as possible. In fact, it would be more appropriate to call this naked karaoke instead of strip karaoke. The only thing that doesn’t come off are my shoes and my kilt hose (socks). And, I was happy to receive a well deserved smack on the ass at the very end of my performance.

Naturally I am already looking forward to next month’s Bareoke (strip karaoke), even though I have no idea what I will sing. One thing is certain however, I will be filming and sharing it for all to see.

Should it be of interest, you can see my previous strip karaoke performance of MJ’s ‘Beat It’ at the Cabaret Playhouse by clicking here.

In the meantime, be sure to come to a Bareoke night if you live in Montreal, or if ever you are visiting the city. It’s as ”bare as you dare” if you are performing a karaoke, and if not, you can simply come to watch and have a good time.

Bareoke is from 10PM until 3am on the first Saturday of every month at Cafe Cleopatra. Hope to see you there!

Jade Sambrook Naked on Rollerblades at the WNBR in Montreal

If I am not mistaken it was a beautiful day in June of 2010 when I witnessed for the very first time the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in action. I was leaving the Rideau Mall in downtown Ottawa and noticed what appeared to be a group of naked people on bikes who were waiting for the traffic light to turn green.

I wondered if I was hallucinating and quietly asked myself if these folks were really naked. I allowed my eyes to get a closer look by focusing onto a bike seat: ”Yep, that is indeed a penis” I told myself.

The light turned green and off they went chanting slogans like ”more ass, less gas”! I put two and two together and concluded that it was the WNBR. I couldn’t help but think how awesome and liberating it must be to participate in such a ride.

For those who do not know what the World Naked Bike Ride is, or what exactly it is protesting, I invite you to visit the official website of the WNBR by clicking here.

I had often read or heard about the World Naked Bike Ride from various media, but I had never participated in one. Jade Sambrook was now determined to do so! Unfortunately though, the following year the Ottawa Police warned that anybody not wearing underwear would be arrested for public nudity. This effectively ruined my motivation to participate.

My first opportunity to participate in a WNBR happened the following year in Montreal. At the time there was massive social unrest stemming from an unprecedented student strike in relation to unreasonable tuition fee increases. A naked protest against these tuition fee increases had been scheduled for June 7, 2012. This was in fact the first time that I would ever be appearing naked in public. And thankfully somebody had posted an invitation to the Montreal edition of the WNBR – scheduled for June 9 – on the Facebook page for the naked protest against tuition hikes.

I therefore scheduled myself to participate in the naked protest on June 7 and to participate in the WNBR on June 9. I had never been naked in public, and now I would have the opportunity to do so on two separate occasions only days apart. It was absolutely thrilling!

For those who may be interested, you can read more about my participation in the naked protest against tuition hikes by clicking here.

In 2012 the MTL edition of the WNBR was scheduled to begin at 10am on a Saturday morning with the bike route passing through a quiet area of town. In other words, not only is the temperature much colder at that time of day, but most people are also still in bed or haven’t left the house yet. This was not very good for visibility or outreach. After all, the WNBR is a protest and if nobody sees it then it is hard to call it a success. I would say that there were maybe thirty to fifty participants in this particular ride.

Nonetheless I still had fun. Maybe not as much fun as the naked protest that had occurred two days earlier, where I got to run away from the sound grenades and tear gas of the riot police while wearing nothing but my birthday suit – but I still had fun at the WNBR, and for a good cause to boot!

Jade Sambrook naked on rollerblades behind a police car at the 2012 World Naked Bike Ride in Montreal.

I am all against body shame and I am all for being proud of who you are. Allow me to say however, that I did the WNBR on rollerblades as opposed to using a bike so that I could be in a standing position and keep my stomach flat. Even somebody with a perfect six-pack abdomen will get stomach expansion when sitting down, and so I avoided sitting on a bike seat for this precise reason. Again, while I am against body shame I just feel better having a flat stomach – or as flat as can be – when I am naked in public. It’s simply a matter of personal preference and comfort. Besides, somebody needed to represent the rollerbladers, right?

Unfortunately I was unable to participate in 2013 or in 2014. Fortunately though, as of 2014 many changes were made after two of the participants took over organizing the event. They increased the outreach on social media so as to attract several more riders. They obtained permission from the Montreal Police for the route to go through the downtown core so as to increase the visibility of the ride. They also obtained permission to have both a daytime ride and a nighttime ride. Furthermore, the start time for the daytime ride was moved to 2PM when it is much warmer outside. While the daytime ride is seen mostly by shoppers, tourists and families, the nighttime ride which starts at 10PM is seen mostly by partyers, patio-goers and people out for a good time. In other words the Montreal edition of the WNBR is now seen by several demographics.

For 2015 I was lucky to participate once again and I attended both the day and nighttime rides wearing rollerblades – just like in 2012.

The daytime ride happened on Sunday, July 5, with approximately sixty to eighty participants. The turnout could have been better (apparently there were about 200 riders in 2014) but issues with the Facebook event page being shut down left many people with the impression that the ride had been cancelled. Surely next year the turnout will be much better, barring any issues with the Facebook event page.

Regardless of the turnout it was a lot of fun. It was a beautiful sunny summer day and the reactions and support from onlookers standing on the sidewalks or sitting in their cars was absolutely amazing. Some people honked their horns in support while others pulled out their cell phones in order to snap photos. Even families with children took the time to wave or give a thumbs-up. As I always say, nobody was harmed or traumatized because they saw a simple naked human body (or in this case a group of naked human bodies) – and this includes the children as much as it does the adults.

The nighttime ride happened on Saturday, August 1, with approximately 25 to 35 participants. Again, the turnout for the nighttime ride could have been better. However, several factors beyond our control complicated matters. To begin with it rained for a short period of time only two hours before the ride. This obviously dissuaded many people from coming. Also, the International Fireworks Competition was on, meaning that bikes are not allowed on public transit during this time. Clearly this may also have dissuaded many people from coming. Yet at 10PM we were good to go,  and just like the daytime ride, it was a blast!

Once again people in cars honked their horns. Folks on the sidewalks screamed words of support. There were many smiles and thumbs-up. Personally, I savoured the feeling of rollerblading down a main city street with the warm breeze hitting my naked body all while chanting ”more ass, less gas”!

I’m already looking forward to next year. In the meantime I continue to hope that one day society will evolve enough to allow public nudity at all times, and not just for reasons of protest such as the World Naked Bike Ride.

I’m certain that had William Wallace participated he might have yelled: ”You can take away my clothes, and by doing so, you definitely wont be taking away my freedom”!

Last but not least, I was able to put together a short video from the daytime ride. Should this be of interest I invite you to watch it below:

Jade Sambrook Naked in the Rain at Toronto Pride 2015

In a previous blog post detailing my experience at the 2014 World Pride Parade in Toronto – where I wore nothing but my birthday suit – I had mentioned that going forward I would be attending Pride in Toronto every year for the rest of my life for as long as it remained legally acceptable to do so in the nude.

Naturally for Toronto Pride 2015 I was extremely disappointed by the forecast of cold rain for the entire weekend. It literally rained on my parade! But in the end that didn’t stop Jade Sambrook from stripping off all of his clothes and spending a great deal of time naked in public. In other words mother nature was not going to get the best of me!

Jade Sambrook naked in the rain on Church Street at Toronto Pride 2015.

Yes there was obviously some “shrinkage” in the forecast due to the cold rain – however by and large I had the best weekend of my entire life! It was totally liberating. It was a feeling of freedom I cannot explain. And the reaction from people – including the Toronto Police – was nothing but positive.

Suffice it to say that spending so much time naked outdoors – in public – has both recharged and re-energized my soul. I received so many compliments, so many thumbs-up, so many smiles, so many winks and so many high-fives and fist bumps. So many women shouted to me “you are beautiful” and “I love you”! I met so many new people – again mostly women – that if I ever want a girlfriend I should probably spend more time naked in public. In fact I have come to the conclusion that I attract more when I am naked than when I am clothed.

I always meet tons of new people when I wear my kilt because it is an icebreaker. And it seems like I meet even more people when I am only wearing shoes. Probably because my shoes are pretty awesome and that alone is a great icebreaker.

Again, the rain initially had me depressed, but in the end I chose to sing and dance under it wearing nothing but my birthday suit and a great big smile. You only live once, and I definitely took advantage of that during Toronto Pride 2015.

I have put together a video that highlights my experience. It is somewhat long – with a run-time of almost 35 minutes – but it is something that I will be able to watch over and over while laughing and telling myself that I did absolutely everything that I wanted to do during my short time here. Again, you only live once!

In the meantime I will be impatiently awaiting Toronto Pride 2016, and I hope to see you there just like me – without any clothes – rain or shine.

VIDEO: Jade Sambrook Performing MJ’s ‘Beat It’ at Lipster’s Bareoke (Strip Karaoke)

A little while back I wrote about my experience at Bareoke, otherwise known as strip karaoke. If you have not had the chance to read that post it is available here.

On the second Thursday of every month, the Cabaret Playhouse in Montreal is host to the bareoke event which is organized by the Lipster entertainment group. Fortunately Lipster puts on such an event, as finding clothing free activities is often difficult. Unfortunately though, you can only be free of clothes while you are performing on stage.

According to Lipster, the bar licence only allows for nudity on the stage. Meanwhile, in a conversation with the owner of the bar, I was told that he didn’t care whether people were naked off of the stage, as long as they were not barefoot. He did however add that since this was Lipster’s event, they had final say in calling the shots.

Personally I would love to stay naked after leaving the stage, and I know that this is the case for many others. Especially considering the hot summer months are on their way and it is naturally hot inside of the venue. With that being said, I am hoping that some slight diplomatic pressure will lead to Lipster allowing nudity off of the stage.

Now regardless of that issue, I am still more than happy to attend. In fact, at last night’s bareoke I performed Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. While I may look 100% ridiculous in my performance, what is important is that I am able to laugh at myself and have fun. After all we only live once, right?

Quite frankly I am not sure if Michael Jackson would be proud of me or if he is rolling over in his grave. Regardless, what is important is that Jade Sambrook got to have some fun while partially naked to boot. I say partially naked because I only remove my kilt during the song. And now we all know what is worn under the kilt! As they say: ”Nothing is worn under the kilt, everything is in perfect working order!” Actually, if I keep jumping around on the stage like I did in last night’s performance, something might be worn sooner rather than later, if you know what I mean?

Besides, it is obviously difficult to undress while singing at the same time. Therefore, only removing the kilt is good enough for me. I’ve done Michael Jackson songs in the past, and I had told myself that I would never do so again. To be honest, I’ve learned that Michael Jackson’s music is actually quite complex and hard to sing.

I had originally planned on singing ‘Kiss’ by Prince, and was actually practicing all day long in anticipation of my bareoke performance. To my surprise though, ‘Kiss’ by Prince was not available in the song book. I’d like to say that I practiced for nothing, but in the end nothing is lost, since I can now sing that song with the right lyrics from beginning to end. Now if only I could learn to dance like Prince, but that is another story for another day.

I therefore opted to do an MJ song, even if I had promised never to do so again. And I learned that ‘Beat It’ is probably the easiest of the MJ songs to karaoke. Naturally I am always looking to sing a song that is upbeat so as not to put the crowd to sleep. I’m sure that nobody wants to hear me karaoke something like ‘Foolish Games’ by Jewel or ‘Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan.

On a funny note, it came to mind after my performance that maybe singing ‘Beat It’ without wearing any underwear was kind of inappropriate. Whatever.

Again, what is important is that I had fun! And unlike in previous occasions, this time I allowed a friend of mine to film my performance, which I am sharing with you today. Although I am 100% ridiculous, I had fun and I got to take my kilt off at the same time.

If you live in or near Montreal, and would like to come to Bareoke, the Facebook event page can be viewed here.

Otherwise, going forward I will hopefully be able to provide additional videos of my bareoke performances, and hopefully, I will also one day be able to stay naked even after leaving the stage.

An Early Trip to the Nude Beach for Jade Sambrook

It was a long and cold winter this one. And like they say in Game of Thrones, winter is coming! That’s right, summer hasn’t even begun and winter is almost upon us. I know this because here in Canada, or at least in Eastern Canada, summer is very short. The amount of nice and hot weather that we get is quite disproportionate to the cold weather we are inflicted with each and every year.

That is why I rushed to Oka nude beach this year. It’s only May 2, and there I was, on my way to get a bit of sun on my buns.

Jade Sambrook naked on the beach at Oka clothing optional textile free nude beach

Oka beach, located inside of Oka Provincial Park, is actually divided by both a textile side and a textile-free side. The nude side is actually an unofficial nude beach where going textile-free is simply tolerated by the authorities. Ask the Provincial Park staff at the gate if there is a nude beach on site and they’ll simply answer with a ”no comment”.

When you arrive at Oka beach and park your car, you actually have to walk a few minutes before you get to the clothing optional side. And for the first time out of all the times I’ve been, this year I noticed a couple of big signs along the trail that spelled out the criminal code offences in regards to public nudity. I had never noticed these signs before, and I was left to wonder if maybe all of sudden the unofficial nude beach was no longer.

If nudity on the clothing optional side were in fact no longer tolerated, I couldn’t help but think that society was definitely becoming more regressive, and that I would definitely be packing my bags in order to move to Vancouver, British Columbia, where Wreck beach is still alive and well.

Jade Sambrook naked on the beach at Oka clothing optional textile free nude beach

Thankfully though I was doing all that thinking for nothing. When I arrived on the textile-free side I was happy to see several naked folks enjoying the sun on the beach. I asked a couple of nudists about the signs, and whether there had been any recent issues with law enforcement.

Apparently I had simply failed to notice these signs during my past visits because according to them, these signs have been there for years. I guess since it’s an unnoficial nude beach, putting these signs up allows the authorities to invoke the criminal code should they ever decide to. And maybe it dissuades folks from wandering off of the nude beach and shocking those that are not expecting to see the “horror” of a naked human body. Whatever the reasons for these signs, I was just happy to learn that the textile-free side is still in perfect working order.

While I wont delve into the criminal code as it relates to public nudity, allow me to say that I am in total disagreement and that I absolutely object to public nudity being a crime. We are born naked, nudity is natural, and so it shouldn’t be a criminal offence to wear your birthday suit, whenever and wherever you please.

Jade Sambrook naked on the beach at Oka clothing optional textile free nude beach

Anyways, getting back to the subject of sun on my buns, I duly stripped my clothes off and spent the better part of the afternoon taking in the sun, enjoying the breeze and cherishing the total feeling of absolute freedom.

While the tide is quite high at this time of the year, meaning that beach space is quite limited along the shoreline, I was happy to see and speak with many nudists, including families with children. For Jade Sambrook there is no better way to educate your child against feelings of body shame than to let them build sand castles on a clothing optional beach.

I’ll definitely be going to the nude beach often this spring and summer, and thanks to that I will gladly live without any tan lines. I know that winter is fast approaching and I therefore wont miss the opportunity to freely enjoy nature the way it was intended to be enjoyed – naked – on the beach and everywhere possible.
